Join Betfair now and and get 20% better odds then the TAB's!!

Thanks to Betfair for giving us some great odds this weekend. Rizzo has sifted through the Betfair markets to give you some of the best odds for this weekend!

Flemington
Race 2: Light Vision - $9.60
Loves this distance and is not up against much. $9.60 is great value for a very good horse.

Race 3: Faint Perfume - $4.30
Has been a star in track work and is out to a nice distance. Bart is in form this spring and Faint Perfume could be anything.

Race 6: Our Heir Apparent (Place) - $4.30
Ran a nice second in the Geelong Classic, should get a good run and this nicely bred Zabeel should get a good run once again.

Race 7: Typhoon Tracy - $2.48
Blitzed everyone else last time she ran and should get a great run once again. $2.48 looks like good odds.

Race 7: Glowlamp (Place) - $6.20
Ran nice last time and should have another good run again. Save the money when betting for the win, it won't win, but bet for the place and you could get some nice value.

Race 8: First Command - $2.70

An absolute star who you should keep backing until it runs a crappy race. You won't get $2.70 that is for sure.

Rosehill
Race 5: The Jackel - $4.90
Is a gun when fresh and is a gun over this distance. Looks like nice odds at the moment and you shouldn't get these odds tomorrow.

Good luck on the punt this weekend. Make sure you check Rizzo's Best Bets at 10am tomorrow for all the tips Australia wide.

Rizzo's Rant: Thursday October 29, 2009

"Save the spring
"

Horses jump in the 2009 Geelong Cup. (Photo: Ryan Reynolds)

Party or horse racing?

The spring carnival is in serious trouble and something needs to be done fast.

The “boganisation” of racing is happening and it is taking over the sport at a remarkable rate.

Women walking around necking bottles of wine, blokes so drunk they crawl to the toilets. This disgraceful behaviour has never been tolerated at the track, yet in 2009 we look and laugh at these people.

Why? What’s changed?

Talking to a young girl as I waited to put my bet on, she proudly claimed that she is here for the social aspect. She wants to get blind drunk and chat with her friends.

“Can you tell me if there is a race on, because I wouldn’t have a clue,” She said.

“I’ll take a photo and put it one facebook so I can show everyone there actually were horses here.”

A man passes out after the Geelong Cup. Sadly he didn't get to see the horses (Photo: Geelong Advertiser)

While it is great that attendances are up and more people are enjoying the sport we love, we must ask at what the real costs are.

Can we afford to continue to put a dent in the image of racing for a quick buck?

Many people seemed shocked that the Geelong Cup was over so quick, they picked a number threw $20 each way on it turned their back on the race and continued to drink. For others they spent hours looking over the form studying watching replays and then finally made their selection.

“Huh, was that it?” One man said as Leica Ding stormed to the finishing line. The man then disappeared back to the bar.

It just goes to show how wide of an audience these meets draw.

So what really is the Spring Carnival about?

Is it a social thing? Do we go to the races to look good and get blind drunk?

Is it a status thing? Are we going to the races just because it is the “thing to do”?

Or maybe the old bloke who sits at the back of the grand stand is out of date. The horses are really the back drop to bands, dance music and after parties.

The bus load of people heading to a Geelong nightclub would suggest the cup is nothing more than an afternoon of pre-drinks.

The problem is that the industry needs these types of people to make money.

With so much racing many of the smaller clubs rely on their once a year cup day to set them up financially for the following season.

More people, more money, more food, more alcohol = more profit.

Therein lies the problem, 50 year old Bob will pay admission, buy a cheap lunch and spend $100 on the punt.

19 year old Sarah will spend $20 on the punt, buy a heap of fatty food and spend $100 on over priced alcohol so she and her friends can get blind drunk.

If you are running the Geelong Racing Club which person do you want on Geelong Cup day?

The problem is that some people who attend racing are doing it because it is seen as the thing to do.

What happens when they move onto the next big craze? Where will that put our carnival?

With prize money at an all time high, we rely on attendances to continue to rise.

It is time to start planning for the future now otherwise we will be in a pickle in ten years time.

The first thing that needs to be done is tighter control on the service of alcohol. If you are drunk your gone, if your drunk you can’t buy any more alcohol, if you are evicted you get an instant 2 year ban.

Getting rid of this “boganism”, will attract less of the unwanted and encourage more families to come to the races.

Nobody wants to see a loved one taken home in the back of an ambulance because a random bloke couldn’t handle his alcohol.

The other plan that needs to be implemented is to find revenue streams that don’t relate to attendances.

This must come from the taxing of corporate bookmakers. They have had a free ride off the industry and it is now time for them to pull their weight.

The rest I guess will be in the hands of RVL and all other controlling boards to decide on, but as a punter I plead with them to make the spring carnival about the horses and not about the party.

I’m Rizzo and that’s my rant.

Wednesday Feature: Midweek Chit Chat

Welcome to the first ever Mid Week Chit Chat. Every week we will run you through the top stories of the week.

Jockey Brent Evans returns a horse to scale at Geelong. He will spend the next two months on the sidelines after testing positive to a banned substance. (Photo: Ryan Reynolds)

JOCKEYS made the news for all the wrong reasons this week with Brent Evans and WA jockey Duncan Miller facing the stewards.

Evans tested positive to a banned substance on September 21 with his hearing in front of the stewards heard on Tuesday.

The sample showed Evans had traces of the substance Ice in his urine.

Evans pleaded guilty and has been banned for two months. He will return to race on December 22.

Since the test Evans has provided a clean sample.

To view the full report head here: http://www.racingvictoria.net.au/stewards/stewardsInqu_4363.aspx

Clare Lindop will also miss rides on Derby and Melbourne Cup Day when she was suspended for careless riding.

The interference happened in race 7 on her mount Last Drop.

She will return Kyenton Cup day.

MEANWHILE, Miller will have to sit out the next twelve months after being found guilty of tampering with his new padded whip.

Miller was charged with improper practice, in that he carried and used the whip in races and trials, between August 1 2009 October 3 this year 2009. His whip had weighted objects in the padded section of the whip.

Miller is now considering his options and may appeal the ban.

More about his charge: http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/racing/6231190/miller-at-crossroads-after-whip-charges/

TENSIONS may be high in the Rawiller household with Brad dumped off star horse Extra Zero in favour of his brother Nash.

David Hayes was unhappy with Brad’s ride on Extra Zero who failed to place in last week’s AAMI Vase.

Rawiller pushed Extra Zero to the front midway through last week’s race to challenge leader Carrara.

Both horses ran out of puff to be run down by backmarker Hanks trained by Peter Moody.

Extra Zero is set to race without Blinkers in an attempt to get the horse switched on.

THREE of the springs potential stars are also set to miss races with trainers changing plans ahead of Flemington’s four day carnival.

Hayes import Changingoftheguard is set to miss the Mackinnon Stakes after battling against time for the Melbourne Cup.

Instead Hayes will hold off for it to run in the Melbourne Cup.

The way the horse trains on Thursday will decide its spring carnival, with an impressive session set to confirm Hayes’ plan of sending the horse straight to the Melbourne Cup.

Cox Plate winner So You Think will have the weekend off with spring star Bart Cummings now targeting the horse for the Group 1 Emriates Stakes over 1600m.

The horse was originally set to run this Saturday in the Mackinnon Stakes over 2000m.

Speed Gifted also joins the casualty list with trainer Lee Freedman pulling the promising stayer out of the Melbourne Cup.

After a devastating win in the Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney on wet ground, Speed Gifted struggled to make the switch to the harder Melbourne surfaces.

After finishing well back in the Cox Plate, Freedman said his horse will now have a break before resuming in the Autumn.

The horse is reportedly very sore and suffering a hamstring injury.

JUST weeks after celebrating Caulfield Guineas, Leon Corstens and Starspangledbanner are embroiled in controversy.

Corstens will front a stewards' inquiry over a prohibited female hormone.

The sample contained Altrenogest, a reproductive hormone used to stop females coming into season.

Altrenogest is not a prohibited substance in female horses but is banned in males.

A date has not yet been set for the inquiry.

It is not the first time Corstens has had to face the stewards on the use of prohibited substances.

In 2005 the Corstens trained horse Oberste was found with TC02 in its blood.

To view that report head here: http://www.racingvictoria.net.au/stewards/stewardsInqu_572.aspx

ROUNDING out the news for the week is the windfall bookies are set to get from this year’s 4-day racing carnival at Flemington.

$1.67 billion is set to be splurged over the carnival, with $230 million set to be spent on the Melbourne Cup alone.

159 million bets are set to be wagered, with three quarters of that set to be done through the state based totes.

Saturday's Derby meeting, featuring nine races and five Group One events, is expected to edge out Cup Day for the biggest turnover.

Cox Plate review

Bart Cummings. What a star!! To do what he did on one of the biggest stages of spring was simply unbelievable. But while we marvel at So You Think, Glen Boss and Cummings it is time to review the top 6 from Saturday's big race.

1.
14. SO YOU THINK (7)......$11
For
Bart Cummings.
His sire has won over this distance.
Glenn Boss.

Against
Experience?
Still learning. Green?
Has only won one race.

Rizzo Says:
Bart has it here for a reason. Top 4 chance.

Pretty accurate. Bart did it have it there for a reason and Boss' sensational ride set up the win. No doubt over the distance now. Was taken to the front (I thought it would go back) and never looked like losing.

2.
13. MANHATTAN RAIN (14)...$21
For
Gun three year old.
Third up and ready to peak.

Against
Outside gate hurts which will make it hard to cross.
Hasn't shown any indication that he can hit the line hard over the distance.

Rizzo Says:
A bit young for this. Will prefer to see him develop first. Pass.

Wrong call. Manhattan Rain backed up its great Caulfield run with another ripper here. The light weight helped and Craig Williams rode it to perfection.

3.
2. ZIPPING (2).........$13

For
Battled hard last year against Maldivian and has had some good lead in form.

Against
He is yet to win a group one.
A slow tempo could cost him.

Rizzo Says:
I think I will pass on him this year. A chance for the first fours.

Ran a much better race then what I thought. Managed to hold on for third and battled away hard. Has to be set for it's third straight Sandown Classic. If it runs it will win easily.

4.
1. EL SEGUNDO (13).....$13
For
He has been there and done that and is now getting back to full strength.
Colin Little said he is prime for this and I think this is the case as well.
Will sit behind Whobe and get a gun run.

Against
He hasn't had the greatest lead in form wise.

Rizzo Says:
A massive shot. I like the $13 and will have a bit.

WOW, what a massive run from the big El. Came storming home out wide and nearly snuck into the places. Nolan rode El to perfection and he continues to show he is a quality racehorse.

5.
5. SCENIC SHOT (6).......$17
For
Super strong horse who never gives up.
Has won at this distance in good fields.
Not bad form going into the race.
Morton has set him for this.

Against
This is an exceptionally hard field.
Couldn't back up Turnbull form last year.

Rizzo Says:
Massive each way chance. Should get a gun run and has been set for this.

Battled along well and just didn't have that kick when it was needed. I suspect the conditions of the turf didn't suit him as well as something a little softer would have.

6.

10. WHOBEGOTYOU (10).....$2.90
For
Loves Moonee Valley.
Awesome lead up form.
Knows what it takes to win.

Against
Can't get to far back if the pace is slow.

Rizzo Says:
Can't find a reason why he will lose. Get on.

ollie would have been stoked with the pace up front. Loomed as a serious player, but found no kick. Stuck on well but will be spelled now.

All in all a very good day. If you ever doubt Bart Cummings again you will pay for it!!

Cox Plate Form Talk

Here it is. Rizzosbestbets full Cox Plate preview. Enjoy!

2. ZIPPING (2).........$13

For
Battled hard last year against Maldivian and has had some good lead in form.

Against
He is yet to win a group one.
A slow tempo could cost him.

Rizzo Says:
I think I will pass on him this year. A chance for the first fours.

3. VISION AND POWER (4)..$17

For
Has an unbelievable group one record.
Its only Vic win was at the Valley.
His Yalumba form is just as good as Whobe and HOD.

Against
Has had a quick rise to fame.
Needs it softer.

Rizzo Says:
Maybe if we get a bit of rain. Could make up the minors.

4. NOM DU JEU (5)........$81
For
Handles all ground.
Can race in various positions.
Michael Rodd.

Against
Only two three year olds have won the Cox Plate.
Is overracing a lot in its races this spring.

Rizzo Says:
Much better horses. Will pass.

6. BLACK PIRANHA (8).....$21
For
Has a group 1 win and 4 group 1 seconds to his name.
Has had a stable jockey for a long time now.
Awesome turn of foot.

Against
Port McQuarie cup form says a lot. That was its first time over 2000m.Surely it can't win a Cox Plate on that form.

Rizzo Says:
Will pass.

7. SIR SLICK (11)........$151
For
Front Runner.
Has won the most Group 1 races of this field.

Against
Is a bit of a spud in Australia.
Could be a late scratching.

Rizzo Says:
Massive Pass.

8. ROAD TO ROCK (1)......$26
For
Drawn very well and should get a good run.
Has decent form over 2000m and has run some handy races.
In form stable.

Against
History is against him with the last Epsom winner to win the cox plate going back 50 years.

Rizzo Says:
A chance for a place, won't win.

9. SPEED GIFTED (12).....$12
For
Has had a dominating win in Sydney.
Can stay all day.
Has that shaddow of unknown over him.

Against
Is set for the cup rather then the plate.

Rizzo Says:
A top 6 finish will please the connections with the plate being a good lead up for the cup.
Will pass on him for this reason.

10. WHOBEGOTYOU (10).....$2.90
For
Loves Moonee Valley.
Awesome lead up form.
Knows what it takes to win.

Against
Can't get to far back if the pace is slow.

Rizzo Says:
Can't find a reason why he will lose. Get on.

11. HEART OF DREAMS (3)..$6
For
Has great form around Whobe.
Should be able to box seat from gate 3.

Against
Has a ? over him for 2000m
Quick pace may kill off his chances.

Rizzo Says:
A massive chance, but a tad overrated. Should still run first four though.

12. ROCK KINGDOM (9).....$17
For
Has good barrier speed.
In form stable.
Decent lead up form.

Against
2000m is unknown.
Epsom form isn't the best Cox Plate Guide.

Rizzo Says:
Pass.

Pass.

14. SO YOU THINK (7)......$11
For
Bart Cummings.
His sire has won over this distance.
Glenn Boss.

Against
Experience?
Still learning. Green?
Has only won one race.

Rizzo Says:
Bart has it here for a reason. Top 4 chance.
